Finding a new home to live your life in can feel like a massive journey. When you’re searching for the right place, you will certainly find all kinds of houses, but what do you do once you’ve found that perfect palace? In fact, once you’ve found your perfect place, the whole house-moving process can accelerate with almost alarming rapidity.
If your household is looking to move, it can be a stressful experience. There is always something that seems to slip your mind, be it changing your address with utility companies such as electricity and gas providers or canceling Netflix, or taking out a contract at a new physical location. Here, we look at the top tips to keep in mind when moving house.
Start The Process of Declutter
Declutter before you move home. To start the process of Declutter, take a step back and decide what you need in your new house or apartment. We recommend taking notes and/or pictures of your current home to use as a reference. This will help you identify any surplus furniture that you didn’t bring along. This will not only reduce how much you have to carry, but it will also save time and space when packing up.
Start by going through each room one by one and asking yourself the inevitable question: do I need this? Once you’ve decided whether an item stays or goes, label them clearly so you can find things easily when moving home.
Prepare Your Property For New Tenants
Once you have a moving date, don’t delay – book any extra services that you might need for your move. That might be a handyman to help prepare your property for new tenants, or a house removals team to help you with packing and transportation.
Book any services that you need – like a removal company and tradespeople – in advance. This will mean you don’t have to panic at the last minute, and it could mean you get a better price. Most good companies probably won’t have availability at late notice, so you’ll also have a lot more options to choose between if you book early too!
Sort Basic Utilities Like Electricity, Wifi, and Water
Organize utilities and Wi-Fi at least a couple of weeks in advance. Your utilities will likely be connected already, but you still have to change them to your name and decide if you want to change providers for any reason. If so, have meter readings conducted around when you move in so you aren’t charged for the previous residents’ usage.
By the end of your first week, you should have sorted basic utilities like electricity and water, but with a new home, it doesn’t stop there. Wi-Fi may also take some time to set up — in the UK, it takes an average of 14 days. If you work from home, a stable Wi-Fi connection may be a must, so make sure you get it set up as soon as possible to avoid any frustrating delays.
Change Your Mailing Address
Redirect your mail now, so you don’t lose everything in the movie. Anyone forgetting to notify their contacts of a change of address would be pretty miffed if something important went missing because of it. Our mail redirection service will automatically forward all your mail for a set period of time, or until you advise us otherwise. You can rely on Royal Mail to keep things safe, secure, and confidential.
