Moving day is quickly approaching and you might be feeling pretty anxious about all the things involved. I’ve seen many people make mistakes when it comes to moving and I know how stressful and unpleasant it can be. That’s why I have created this simple list of 10 common moving mistakes which you should avoid. Whether you are seasoned movers or about to move for the first time, I’m sure you will find plenty of useful advice below.
Forgetting to Pack your Stuff
This is an easy one! Whether you’re moving across the hall or across the country, always make sure you have a checklist of everything you own and make sure it gets packed up safely.
Not making an Inventory List
Before you start packing up your things, make an inventory list of every item in your home. This will help you keep track of what you have and make sure that nothing gets lost or damaged during the move. Leaving items behind. As soon as you realize that you’ve forgotten something, call the moving company immediately to let them know about it. If possible, have them go back for it before they leave with your other belongings or ask if they can deliver it when they return in two or three days.
Packing Fragile Items with Regular Clothes and Boxes
One of the biggest mistakes people make when they move is packing fragile items with other items that aren’t as fragile. This causes a lot of damage to both items as well as your furniture in general. If you have expensive dishes or glassware, pack them separately and put bubble wrap around them so they don’t break during transit. You should also use a moving blanket or box liner to protect the item from bumps and bruises while it’s being transported from one place to another.
Not Getting Rid of Unwanted Items
This one is especially important if you’re downsizing or moving into a smaller space after having kids. The last thing you want is to have boxes and boxes of stuff in your new home that no longer fits into your lifestyle or needs. It’s better to get rid of things before they come with you than get rid of them later — especially if they’re expensive or sentimental items that could be hard to part with.
Not Booking Movers Early Enough
Moving can take more time than you think — especially if you’re doing it yourself. If you book movers too late in the game, they may not be available or they might charge extra for last-minute jobs. Plus, that’ll leave less time for packing and other prep work before the big day arrives.
Trying to do Everything Yourself
This is a huge mistake because it requires so much time and effort on your part. You have other things to do, such as finding a new home or preparing for the move. If you try to do everything yourself, you won’t have enough time or energy left over to complete other tasks that need to be done before moving day arrives.
Worrying about Packing too Much
It’s tempting to pack up all your stuff and then pay someone else to move it for you. But if you’ve got some time on your hands and don’t mind doing some heavy lifting yourself, save some cash by packing as much as possible yourself.
Forgetting about Insurance.
Your items may not be damaged during the move itself, but they could be lost or stolen between the time they leave your old home and arrive at your new one (or even after they’re delivered). Consider purchasing insurance for these situations so that if anything goes wrong, you’re covered.
Packing too Much Stuff
You can always buy more stuff later on if needed! But the more stuff you bring with you into your new home, the longer it will take for everything to settle down again once unpacked and organized around the house (if it ever does). So only pack items that are absolutely necessary for day-to-day life at home until everything else has been moved over from storage or other locations like an office space etc.
Not Packing Properly
Poorly packed boxes can cause damage to your belongings during transit, which means you’ll have to pay more money to replace them. If a box is too heavy, then it’s not packed properly either! It’s also a good idea to label each box with its contents and a room number so they don’t get mixed up in storage or while unpacking at your new home.
With so many things to consider, it’s no wonder that there are so many moving mistakes. But by staying organized, getting the right supplies and packing up with the right mindset, you can ensure a stress-free experience. Putting your best foot forward at ease any moving anxiety and ensuring your move goes more smoothly than expected.
